Man City Eye More Silverware After Super Cup Win

Manchester City have started the new season with a bang by winning the UEFA Super Cup after beating out Sevilla FC on penalties on Wednesday night, 16 August.

The Citizens dominated the fight against the Spanish club at Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens, Greece, but were held at bay with the scoreboard reflecting 1-1 at the final whistle.

The resulting penalty shootout was a real nail-biter with each side finding the back of the net, until Sevilla player Nemanha Gudelj struck the bar, making it 5-4, and thus handing the title to Pep Guardiola’s men.

“We are really pleased for the club to win this,” Guardiola said in a post-match interview, sharing his joy at City winning the European competition for the first time since it started five decades ago. He quickly mused about completing his trophy list: “We miss just one to finish the full circle and have all the titles we can have.”

Although his team were more than excited to win, he put a “ban” on boozy celebrations so as to focus on their upcoming English Premier League (EPL) matches.

To date, the 52-year-old Spanish coach has helped Man City add the following trophies to their silverware cabinet: five EPLs, four League Cups, two FA Cups and a UEFA Champions League.
